“Nice Hotel we really enjoyed our vacation”

“We (couple in our thirties) booked this hotel over New Year‘s with the idea of a premium all inclusive holiday and the occasional trip to other places on the island (in a rental car) for a change. Overall, the hotel accommodates for this (fantastic food buffets, nice pool area, though the pools need better heating in January, mostly attentive staff). But this is where the problems start. It’s only mostly attentive staff whereas the rest make the overall experience far less enjoyable.A few months ahead of time we emailed them to place a dinner reservation at their teriyaki grill restaurant for New Year‘s Eve. Instead of letting us know that New Year’s Eve would only be buffet at the main restaurant, they asked us to come back closer to the actual date. The pool area is divided into different servicing sections with unclear responsibilities and little help from staff to get directed to the right person. The room key failed after the first day and had to be replaced once a day (over a 7 night stay) on average making a everyday journey to the reception necessary. Reception staff was lacking any knowledge and creativity in solving the issue (such as replacing the lock or at least rebooting it), basically letting us know that we should keep the keys from any magnetic fields (once even after literally returning within five minutes of picking up a new key and with zero magnetic field such as a cell phone present). Nespresso capsules and creamer in the room were restocked maybe once throughout the week we spent at the hotel. In addition to these staff inadequacies, the hotel also has some built-in flaws: coffee after dinner was sometimes charged, sometimes not, same with sparkling water (independent of the consumption of other beverages -> house wine being free with half board, a somewhat questionable decision from a health perspective), no pattern recognizable. Overall, the hotel is good value for money and it has some really exceptional staff. However, for us the described downsides outweighed the pluses (also based on our experience in similar hotels on the Canary Islands) and we won’t return.”
